With one suspected case of Lassa fever outbreak reported in Plateau state with one death recorded, the government has declared an emergency in the heath sector.
As a result the state government has directed the health ministry to constitutes an emergency team to embark on the massive screening of people to stop the spread of the epidemic to rural areas, according to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Gwatau Habila Abel.
Pharm Abel made this disclosure in an interview with our correspondent at the Joseph Gwomwalk Secretariat in Jos, the Plateau State capital .
He said the Plateau state is working in conjunction with federal government health personnel to educate the people in the 17 local governments with a kick-off of the programme in Langtang LGA.
According to him the state government had increase its sensitisation and awareness campaign on the dangers of the scourge of after one suspected case has been sent for screening in Lagos laboratory .
He explained further that the ministry of health has written to government to supply them or procure more drugs to contain with the outbreak of the disease in the state.
Pharm Abel emphasised that the government is on top of lassa fever outbreak were a patient was suspected to have contacted the symptoms and later died in the hospital of which her corpse had been under diagnosis to identify the immediate causes before going to pronounce its to the public.
“We have recorded one case and the person was transported to the federal medical centre where different treatment is going on to know main cause of the disease “, he said.
Pharm Abel advised the general public to be more hygiene conscious and avoid crowded rooms during this hot season which usually fuels the outbreak of Cerebra Spinal Meningitis CSM.
