Fear Grips Kano Residents Over Political Clash

 

The weekend political clash between supporters and the movement of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso called Kwankwasiyya and those of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, called Gandujiyya have come under the condemnation of residents of the ancient city who got the brunt of the bloody clash during the durbar festivity in Kano on Saturday.

The former Secretary to the state government Alhaji Rabiu Sulaiman and some ex-commissioners were injured in the clash.

As the durbar enters its third day, Monday, many are afraid of a re-occurrence of the Saturday clash that residents near the Emir’s Palace described as “bloody” even though the Police have tightened security in and the area to ensure safety

Malam Sammani Abubakar told NAN that the situation was worrisome as Kano was considered to have abandoned political mayhem caused by thugs.

He explained that the lack of enough security personnel at the scene made the situation worse.

Malam Usman Sani, another resident who witnessed the situation, said some of those attacked had to shield themselves in people’s houses.

He decried the clash at the time of festivity, saying that it had affected ordinary people that were not politicians.

Malama Hadiza Abdulkarim, a housewife, said her son was badly injured at the scene of the clash.

According to her, “My son isn’t a politician but was there to watch the durbar yet he was trying to run away when the clash began and he was hit with a matchet.”

She appealed to authorities to investigate the matter and deal with whoever was involved.

The political clash erupted in Kano on Saturday during the durbar celebration of eid el Kabir.

Police have confirmed the incidence saying that security have been tightened to allow people have a peaceful celebration for the remaining days of the eid.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Magaji Majiya, confirmed to NAN on Sunday that Kwankwasiyya and Gandujiyya sects of the APC clashed on Saturday while at the durbar celebration.

Majiya revealed that the Police had not made any arrest in regards to the clash, but had has launched an investigation on the matter.

The Command has tightened security across the metropolis to ensure a hitch free celebration and that people were safe.
