Edo 2020: Team Bayelsa in Medals Haul As Pregnant Athlete Wins First Gold for Lagos

 

 

As officials of the 20th National Sports Festival holding in Benin-City, the Edo State capital prepared to host Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, April 6 for the official opening of the sports festival, Team Bayelsa and Lagos state made headlines news that increased thge tempo at the games fiesta. Bayelsa hauled 4 Gold Medals on Day Two of Competition, making it a total of nine medals comprising 4 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze Medals, in two days.

For Lagos, a heavily pregnant Aminat Idrees won a gold medal in a Taekwondo event on Monday, alongside her male teammate, Arowora Roqeeb in the Mixed Poomsae category in Taekwondo competition.

Aminat took the silver medal for placing second in the female team Poomsae category and an individual bronze in the same category as well, to wrap up an inspiring individual collection of medals. She thus gave Lagos her first set of medals at the ongoing event.
 For Bayelsa, a breakdown of the medal indicates that out of the four gold medals, swimming had two, while cycling and Kungfu had one each.

Swimming produced all three silver medals and a bronze while Danshu Kungfu also had a bronze.

This brings the total medal haul so far to 9 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze Medals.

Swimming once more proved to be the gold cow on the second day of action, producing 2 of the gold medals courtesy of golden girl, Ifiemi Gagbe who won the women’s 1,500 meters free style and women’s individual 400 meters medley events much to the excitement of the cheering Bayelsa supporters at pool side.

Ifiemie also added bronze medal in the 200 meters back stroke as Yellow Yeighya had two silver medals in the men’s 200meters and 50meters butterfly stroke just as Team Bayelsa added silver medal in the men’s 200meters free style relay.

Earlier in the day, it was Kalizibe Caleb that opened the floodgates with a gold medal performance in the 1,000 kilometer sprint cycling race.

Kungfu also produced gold medal following a fascinating display in Taolu demonstration by Favour Godspower as Ebitonmo Oyeindenyefa settled for bronze medal in Danshu Kungfu.

Meanwhile, all three Bayelsa Boxers progressed into the next round of boxing in the 69kg, 75kg and 81kg after defeating their opponents.
