Do It Yourself: Executive Stress: Tips For Everyday Living

By Opulentus ( In-House Consultant)

Do you belong to the group often described by the press as mover and shaker, socialite, celebrity, captains of industry and Board member? This may be for you.

The headlines are running with increasing rate of stress related diseases; recurrence through mutation of those cured many years ago and the demands of urban life and social pressures on most of us.

Your everyday living involves some form of arithmetic in the form of multiplication, subtraction, division and addition in three key areas of human life; relationship, health and money. But unlike mathematics which operates on known, old-age fixed rules, life’s rules do not often work in strict accordance with one’s expectation because we live in a competitive world in which personal targets and goals often clash with that of the group or community and the set rules that are there to make order out of a bad situation seem inadequate.

These tips should help you to stay in top form, always roaring to go. Don’t ignore them:

  1. Separate Your Person from Your Work:

Don’t get into the habit of carrying on at home or on holidays your office work. This is one of the great mistakes most executives make. Clearly, work is/should be for the workplace, no matter the constraints, temptations and expectations. Agree, one should take seriously ones source of income and the responsibilities that go with them, especially in a monetized and competitive society we all live in today.

But remember that the ultimate goal, which is your health, may be defeated in the end if the daily bread as income your duty bakes regularly at your health’s expense, would be devoted to feeding a sickly body. And to think there would always be a replacement to do the work in an eventuality!

The point here is to prioritize: Give each demand its due place. This not only fulfills you, it also refreshes you mentally. And enables you to take control over your life choices.

  1. Social Stress: Choose a relaxation method that suits you. This is very important in checking stress. Again, here is where many of our executives are in default. Take for example an observed common attitude among our execs. Some go on vacation or trips with the same set of friends and turn the place into confusion as they take to talking about the same set of things. This leads to the same source of stress being circulated in another place. To avoid this temptation, new contacts, new friends should be made, extended and widened.
  2. Read Literature: It is very helpful to get out of ones own field of learning and be with others of different field by reading or by physical contact and social discussion. A banker, for instance, should know what is happening in politics, environment, AIDS, and so on, not necessarily in his/her locality but in the international circuit. This will broaden his horizon and make him/her less myopic and bigoted.
  3. 4. Life Style: The rule of the thumb here is moderation. Whether it is smoking, eating, drinking, or choosing a career, the lifestyle must be modified. Research in medicine is awash with information that common terminal diseases such as cancer, heart diseases are due to extremes in a particular lifestyle. Execs who attend one reception or the other must watch what they eat. They must watch their weight also.
  4. Board Meetings: This should deal on specifics and held in very cordial and warm atmosphere. Certain nasty investors should be avoided. They can provoke a great deal of bitterness and stress by their quarrelsome arguments.
  5. Exercise: This is a must for execs. They should exercise regularly, at home or in the office. The reason is simple: They are driven in air-conditioned cars, go through lifts to their offices, seat on comfortable chairs and then come back from home to repeat the process the next day and so on. But the idea is to start with a simple kind of exercise. Someone who has not exercised regularly cannot just start off like the one who has been in a jogging regime for a long time; something like walking around the room at intervals, going out for fresh air and taking a series of deep breathing exercises before closing for the day, could do for a start.

For those who travel often in aircraft, stretching after disembarkation could be very relaxing. The aircraft is usually dry and seating immobile for quite sometime could result in stagnation of blood circulation, according to findings by doctors. Overtime, this could lead to a disease called thrombosis.

  1. Meditation: Find time to be alone to contemplate, concentrate and visalise consciously your goals and vision and see how often they make your heart and adrenaline and make you feel on top of the world: Do you derive pleasure, satisfaction and happiness from your work, skill, talent and decisions?

Take a shot at these health living tips and see if you would not be kitted for the life of an efficient and effective Execs.
