Defamation: Atiku Sues Presidential Aide, Lauretta Onochie, Demands Written Apology

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has sued Mrs Laureta Onochie, Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on social media for defamation, following her story on her Twitter page, titled “Atiku on UAE Watchlist- Security Sources”, which was also published by some national and online publications.

Abubakar stated that the story is a “figment of the imagination” of Mrs Onochie, and that the “odious publication”, was calculated to rubbish his image and reputation as well as to “portray him as an evil man, mentor of terrorists and someone who has links with terrorists and a person who is interested in destabilizing the peace and unity of Nigeria…”

He said that before and after the “odious”, publication, he has travelled to the UAE and was never apprehended by the police, or denied entry into the country as portrayed by the presidential aide, whose sole intention, “inference and conclusion in the obviously politically orchestrated story”, it appears, is to cause damage to his reputation as he is currently before the Election Petition Tribunal, challenging her boss, President Buhari’s, “purported victory”.

In a letter by his lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, titled “Demand for Apology, Retraction and Payment of Damges for Your Defamatory Statement Against and Concerning The Person of His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, GCON”, Abubakar asked Onochie to tender a written retraction of and tender an apology for the libelous publications in six national dailies circulating in Nigeria and one international publication dnthe social media platform where she made the earlier publication. She is also asked to pay N500million as damages.
