The Commander General (CG) of the Abia State Vigilance Group (ASVG), Chief Martin Idika Mba has said that the group
has been doing its best in the campaign against COVID-19 in the state.
Mba stated this against the background of the rising cases of confirmed COVID-19 in the state, expressing worry over the figure which shut up from less than 20 to about 180 last weekend.
“We have never lowered our guard since the lockdown of the state about three months ago. We will continue to man our beats until the virus is eventually eradicated in the state,” he noted.
He expressed worry that even in the face of its toll both locally and globally, some people are still not convinced of the reality of the pandemic, adding that such people are seriously gambling with their health.
“I have always wondered why some people are yet to be convinced about the existence of the virus. We all have to brace up to its reality and take the necessary steps to check its further spread.
He, therefore called on the people to practice the protocols for the prevention of the global pandemic to the letters, expressing the hope that by this, the figure will never get of control.
The CG used the period to add his voice to the calls for stronger action against rape and gender-based violence, describing some of the reported recent cases of the crime as both demonic and unthinkable.
Mba said it was time every body stood up against the crime in its entirely, suggesting that if nothing was done about it, women will one day became perpetually endangered in the country.
Speaking about the level of security in the state, he noted that with the cooperation of other security agencies, the menace has been put under control, assuring that the group will remain committed to the feat.
“As usual, I want to appeal to the people, to, in pursuance of our collective bargain of ensuring the safety of our lives and property, provide the security agencies with useful information about crime and criminals.
