APC: Kogi Dares Party, Adopts Indirect Primaries

From  Joseph Amedu, Lokoja

Against party directives on adoption of direct primaries to choose candidates for the elective positions for the 2019 elections, the Kogi branch has adopted indirect primaries, citing peculiar circumstances of the state

The party had initially planned to adopt indirect primary for all elective positions, but later bowed to pressures and adopted direct primaries.

Indirect primary election would require delegates to choose the party’s candidate while direct primary is a process where interested members of the party vote for a candidate. Having agreed on direct primaries, it threatened to sanction any of its members who opposed the new directive, according to a statement issued by acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena on Sunday.

At a stakeholders meeting of the All Progressive Congress in government house, Lokoja Wednesday to discuss and resolve on the type of method to adopt for the primary election of the party state Chairman of APC Alhaji Abdullahi Bello said the aim of the meeting was to allow members and stakeholders choose one of the suitable options for the conduct of primary election of the party.

He noted that APC in Kogi state has adopted indirect primaries, described the option as cheap, credible and easy to conduct.

He commended the governor for his support that led to the success of the party at the recently conducted bye -election into Lokoja/Kogi Koton-Karfe federal constituency.

The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly Rt Hon. Matthew Kolawole said direct primary election could only throw the party into concussion, saying the indirect method is appropriate for the party in the state base on the political environment.

He therefore moved for the adoption of the indirect primary election in Kogi APC, which was unanimously accepted by the members and stakeholders of the party.

Also speaking at the meeting, Governor Bello reaffirmed that he is for all the aspirants vying for various elective positions on the platform of the party, saying whomever emerged at the primaries will be the candidate of APC.

He assured that the party would sponsor all the candidates for the general election to ensure that APC wins the contestable positions.

“I have never anointed any aspirants for any position. Forms are already on sale, any interested members of the party who are willing to contest elective positions on the platform of APC in Kogi state should go and buy their forms. The party will create a level playing ground for all the aspirants so that we can achieve our set objectives” he said

He cautioned the party executives in Kogi state against collection of money from aspirants in the name of rendering assistance to them, warning that whoever indulge in such act would be sanctioned.

According to him “The era of extorting aspirants is over. We will sanction any body who goes against this warning, who ever is caught will face the full wrath of the law no matter who she or he is in the party”
