Afenifere Urges FG To Swear Justice Onnoghen In As CJN

Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group yesterday rose from its monthly meeting in Akure with a three point agenda, namely the immediate swearing in of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of the Federation, an end to sectarian violence and killings in many parts of the country and the restructuring of the country based on the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference.

The meeting, which was held in the Akure home of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti issued a communiqué on the above subjects.

National Publicity of the group, Chief Yinka Odumakin read the outcome to journalists.

On the near three months expiration of the tenure of Acting Chief, Onnoghen, he said: “We see this as an assault if the three months expires and he is not confirmed as CJN of Nigeria. It will be an assault on our Constitution and an attempt to crudely end the career of a worthy Nigerian. We therefore call on Mr President to within a few days left of the expiration of the tenure as Acting Chief Justice send his name to the Senate for confirmation as the CJN as he is the man in line because that is what the Constitution says”

On the sectarian killings the communiqué reads: “ Leaders of the group express worry over mass killings in Southern Kaduna, Middle-Belt communities, in Igboland, in Oke-Ogun in Oyo state and in different parts of the country where there were clashes between herdsmen and farmers”

On restructuring it said the group will set up a high power committee to liaise with other groups in the country with the aim to restructure the country. “The main focus is that all hands be on deck for the mobilization towards the implementation of the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference which was submitted to the Federal Executive Council”
