Ahead of the farming season, former Abia State governor, Senator Theodore Orji has said that he has commenced procurement of agricultural equipment and fertiliser for distribution among his constituents.
Orji disclosed this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent after addressing members of the Grassroots Movement at his Constituency Office in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
He said this was aimed at encouraging the farmers among them to key into the calls by both the federal and state governments on the people to revive the agricultural sector.
Starting that while he was in office he did his best to encourage the growth of the sector, he assured that he would put a mechanism to ensure the items reached the target members.
According to the senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, the sector if properly harnessed, has the potential to make the country great again.
“The sector is not limited to food production, fishery, animal husbandry or the like, but extends to processing, preserving, and marketing which could offer gainful employments to our teaming youths,” he said.
However, he said his worry was that the efforts of farmers in the country were being threatened by the menace of Fulani herdsmen, saying the issue requires urgent federal government attention.
The senator, who had earlier been adopted by the movement as their candidate for then seat in 2019, suggested ranching as alternative to open grazing as panacea for the menace.
Similarly, the Chairman of Board of Trustees (BoT) of the movement, Hon Amanze Israel, said it was formed to identify the impediments to the development and welfare of rural dwellers in the state.
He said the movement was one of the Ochendo (Orji) pro-groups that participated actively during the 2015 general election to ensure victory for Orji and the governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.
According to the agriculturist and dealer on agricultural inputs, “However, our efforts have not been so recognised both in the area of appointment, employment, empowerment and amenities to our members.”
Explaining that they adopted both the senator and the governor as their candidates as their candidates for the 2019 elections, he solicited Orji’s assistance for them succeed.
